Questions & Answers About Self-publishing

  1. What’s the difference between vanity publishing and self-publishing?
Vanity publishing is really subsidy publishing. You pay the subsidy press to publish your book rather than actually publishing it yourself. Although you still own the copyright, their imprint goes on it and some will own the print rights.

  2. When should I get an editor?
After you finish your book you should have it edited for spelling and grammar mistakes. Do it before you print your book or you will hear about your mistakes from your readers.

  3. How do I copyright my book?
Contact the copyright office at www.bdc-canada.com. The 2007 filing fee is $50.

  4. How much does an ISBN cost?
In Canada there is no charge for an ISBN. You get one at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/isn.

  5. Do I need a website?
It certainly helps with marketing your book. Most service providers give customers 2-5 MG of web space if you cannot afford your own domain. There are sites on the internet where you can find templates to build your own website. Having a BLOG is also a good marketing tip.

  6. How many books should I print?
U.S. books say you should print no less than 3000, but I think 500-1000 is most reasonable for Canada and other countries with smaller populations. If you need more, have more printed. While you may save money per book having a big order done, there is no savings if they are sitting in your basement.

  7. Why do I need an ISBN?
An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is the means to register your book as being in existence. Without it, your book is basically invisible. It does not cost anything in Canada and is worth its weight in gold.

  8. Can I sell my books to a bookstore myself?
Independent booksellers are usually great about supporting well written and well designed self-published books. They will take the books on consignment so be sure to have a contract ready. Do not waste your time trying to get into the Chapters-Indigo chain except at the local level.

  9. How do I get a barcode?
You can order one online and pay with a credit card. If you have to pay with a check, it will take longer to arrive. Ask your book printer if they can do one for you.

  10. How do I get a business number?
If you live in BC or Ontario, go to www.bdc-canada.com and click on the Business Development Centre. The information you need to register a business is in there.

  11. Do I need to worry about GST?
While there is normally GST charged on books, your little independent publishing business does not need to collect it unless sales are $30,000 or more. If your sales become that high, please see an accountant for advice.

  12. How important is the cover art and typeface?
The cover has 7 seconds to sell your book to a prospective reader. It is very important. Hire a professional if you can. Do not skimp on either cover or interior design. Your book is your best marketing too.

  13. What goes into a media package?
An information sheet, cover letter stating why your book is important, news release, bookmark, author bio and photo, and a page of testimonials.

  14. How do I send my books to newspapers for reviews? Chapter 6

  15. If I sell my book to a distributor, can I still sell them myself?
If you find distribution, ask about selling yourself. The contract would probably give them the right to sell to all “traditional booksellers.” That means bookstores, gift shops, etc. You can probably still sell at events, fairs, and on your website. Just ensure the price is the same as the distributors. Do not undercut their price. That is a poor business practice.

  16. What are remainders?
After a book has run its course as a timely product, left over books can be sold to a remainder dealer who will sell them at a low cost. Because of this, they will probably only pay a couple of dollars for each book.

  17. Will I make money from my book?
That depends on many things – the book subject, the marketing plan, and your sales ability. Like anything in life, there are no guarantees.
